Wolfgang Jurgen Mews, age 82, passed away peacefully at his home in Tyler, Texas, on August 12, 2026.
Born on January 30, 1944, in Bruchsal, Germany, to Paul Albert and Klara Mews, Wolfgang was raised in Germany until immigrating to the United States with his family in 1955.
A proud veteran, Wolfgang served his country in the United States Navy. During his service in Vietnam, he was decorated with the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. Over the course of his military career, he accomplished one of his proudest personal achievements: circumnavigating the globe three times.
Wolfgang possessed a deep, lifelong passion for history and languages. A dedicated student of world events and culture, he famously scored higher than his own professor on the national history exam. He was an avid reader whose favorite books included Aztec by Gary Jennings and Shogun by James Clavell.
An adventurous spirit at heart, Wolfgang loved road trips, traveling abroad, and immersing himself in different cultures around the world, with his journey through India remaining his absolute favorite travel experience. In his leisure time, he enjoyed playing and watching both golf and soccer.
Wolfgang is survived by his beloved wife, Maria del Carmen Mews, as well as his daughter, Jadwiga Mews, and her wife, Alma Mews.
A funeral service to honor and celebrate Wolfgang's life will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, August 22, 2026 at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church, 18221 FM 2493, Flint, TX 75762.
