Rita Elizabeth Christenot, 78, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 13, 2025, surrounded by her loving family at Christus Trinity Mother Frances in Tyler, Texas.
Born in Sandusky, Ohio, on March 12, 1947, Rita was the third of six children to the late William and Maxine Coleman. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Margret Rose Ryan and Patricia Howell; and her daughter, Joy Gourley.
Rita dedicated her life to caring for others. She first worked as a licensed social worker before pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Texas at Tyler. She went on to serve many years as a nurse, combining compassion with professional skill until her retirement. On October 7, 2011, Rita married Harley George Christenot, and together they embraced a blended family of nine daughters.
After her career, she and her husband, George, enjoyed traveling together and sharing new experiences. She was also a devoted Master Gardener, giving back to her community and finding joy in cultivating beauty and growth. During election seasons, she faithfully volunteered at the polls, proudly serving her country.
Rita's greatest joy came from her family. She loved gathering with her children and grandchildren, cherishing every memory made. She possessed a selfless nature, always ready to help those in need. She nurtured her creativity through gardening, drawing, and teaching, always eager to grow and develop new abilities. Her mind was endlessly curious, and she never stopped seeking knowledge, exploring truth, or sharing wisdom.
She is remembered with love by her children: Katy Gourley; Ali and Trevor Lewis and their eight children; Tiffany and Johnny Acker and their three sons; Tasha and Matt Land and their two sons; and Gena and Steven Pine and their four children.
Rita was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she served in many callings and built lasting friendships within the Tyler Stake. She found fulfillment in temple work and genealogy, reflecting her deep love for her ancestors and her faith.
Above all, Rita's life was defined by her compassion, creativity, and her ability to make others feel valued and cared for. Her legacy of faith, family, and service will continue through those who knew and loved her.
